The chapter on "Cues, Questions, and Advance Organizers" was also very interesting, although not new to me. I have used various types of concept organizers in my class, depending on the topic and subject area. I find that they are a great way to get students to break down a chunk of information so that they can actually use it to complete an assignment. I have also been working with a former student of mine to improve his comprehension strategies. In this time, we have been exploring how using a graphic organizer can assist in how he can answer later comprehension strategies. And in our discussions together, he has told me that he found it much easier to answer the questions because he thought through the information first.
Virtual Field Trips are so interesting, and there are so many good resources available! I like that students can explore a concept on their own, asking for direction when necessary. Whether it is in the form of a virtual field trip, or note-taking, or concept organizers, students are given the opportunity to take in new knowledge and develop their own learning. I think that these technological tools can help the teacher move more freely into the role of facilitator.
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI am also really enjoying the suggestions in our text and from the course. They are all things that I learned about in college, 5 years ago. However, I spent my first 5 years of teaching - just trying to survive. This information couldn't have come at a better time! I'm ready to start using more technology in my classroom. I also agree with you that these technological tools will help teacher move into more of a facilitator role.

Sarah,
ReplyDeleteNice post! I also found the tracking and summarization tools in Microsoft Word will definitely help with note taking and summarizing. I am excited in trying virtal field trips as well because students will be able to view something they are not privy to in their daily lives.
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI agree that using concept organizers will help with comprehension by making many more 'connections.' After reading the text, I am looking forward to using them more often now that I have discovered how effective they are.
Hi Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI agree that using a graphic organizer will help your former student with comprehension. After reading this week's resources, I am excited about using them in all areas. I am looking forward to incorporating them into math - a bit of a challenge, but maybe it will help with 2 and 3-digit division steps, geometry concepts, and fractions/decimals. I find that my math students need every extra connection they can get!
I have been wanted to start incorporating technology into my classroom more that just the few times a quarter. The resources in this coarse are a great help. I also have a student that has a lower comprehension level. I have been working hard to help him this year by giving him shortened notes and graphic organizers to use. They have helped improve his comprehension this year. I plan to use the concept map tool with him before we get out for summer break because I think that will be something he can use in all of his future classes.
